We have been learning quite a bit in Biology lately over genetics. Yesterday our lesson was over DNA. We were able to have a hands-on learning lesson. We had a strawberry and decided to extract its DNA. We mixed all of the ingredients to make the extraction solution and then we poured it in a bag with the strawberry. After this we mashed the strawberry until it was a pink juice, we then sieved the liquid away from the chucks over strawberries that were left. When we finished this we poured alchohol into the solution. After about 3 minutes there were bubbles that formed over the top (shown in the picture above).
We took a pair of tweezers and grabbed the center of the bubbles. When we began lifting the tweezers out of the beaker the DNA of the strawberry formed together to make a strand of DNA (show in the picture to the left).
We have all of the items ready to began filming our vocabulary videos. We have also been covering Punnet Squares and learning about recessive and dominant traits. We are going to be making a Vocabulary Movie over all of the Vocab we have learned. Also, we will be filming a Punnet Square movie.
Today we learned about Heredity, the passing on of characteristics (traits) from parents to offsprings. This study is called Genetics.
Gregor Mendel used peas plants to study Genetics. Pea plants reproduce sexually. They have two distinct male & female sex cells called gametes.
Today is the first day of our Genetics project. We have decided the select people to do our timeline over. We are going to do our project over: Gregor Mendel, Oswald Avery, Colin McLeod, James Watson, Archibald Garrod, Herbert Boyer, Gregory Bateson, Stanley Cohen, and the Egyptians.
We are going to go to our technology teacher, Mrs. Bentley, and she is going to work with us on how to organize our information and how we are going
